Introducing Cody

Exciting news – we have a special addition to our family!

Meet Cody.

My mom got Cody at the beginning of August. He’s now a 10 week old black lab/golden retriever mix. He’s absolutely adorable but everyone that meets him thinks that he is going to be HUGE. I agree as well, his paws are giant for his age.

I just now noticed that he’s smiling for the camera! He already looks like a big boy here.

Cody is so very sweet. He’s been coming to stay with me the past few weekends and Belle and Jake adore him.Ā Can’t you tell? šŸ˜‰ It did take Belle a little while to get over her jealously issues, but she’s pretty fine with him now.

Yes, they are wearing shirts. I had manage to acquire a couple thanks to some monthly subscription boxes and since I was home alone, I decided to torture the pair of them by making them wear the shirts for a moment.

It’s fun having a puppy around again, though potty training is the worst. But look how good he fits in with his siblings! He’s already proven to be very smart – he fetches, sits, and is learning to lay down. He loves the water as well and my boyfriend is hoping to borrow him from my mom and train him to hunt, just like his big brother Jake.

July Catch-Up

Here I am, a week or so into August already, finally getting around to writing an entry for July. July was a crazy month between work, side jobs, and just general life. So I’ll do a photo post.

P1030120
I was finally able to make it down to the Outer Banks to stay for a night in my grandparent’s timeshare. Its been years since I have been able to get down there.
P1030162
This was the first big harvest out of the garden at my boyfriend’s house – corn, cabbage, squash, lots of various tomatoes, eggplants, carrots, peppers, and more!
P1030179
The majority of our tomatoes, we stew down and can to use over winter – look at how gorgeous this mixture is!
P1030180
I was able to spend some time with my mom in July, so what did we do? Grill out of course.
P1030211
Near the end of July, I was a vendor at Scares That Care Weekend in Williamsburg. I had a great time and met some fabulous people.
P1030215
My swag. I added Seth Gilliam’s (Father Gabriel) signature to my poster from The Walking Dead.

The newest addition to our family – Cody (mom’s dog). He’s a golden retriever/lab mix and is absolutely adorable. Belle (my dog) is still a little hesitant about him but I know that she will grow to love him.

Trick or Treat (pic heavy)

October 31st was the scariest day that I have probably experienced yet. My Halloween weekend started out so well too. My boyfriend and I went out to Plaza Azteca on Friday night and got THE PIG. I can’t ever remember what the pig is actually called but it’s onions, green peppers, chicken, steak, shrimp, and pineapple served in this sizzling hot bowl shaped like a pig, sort of like fajitas. It is the best thing on their menu and the only thing we will get from there (plus, it’s big enough for us to share WITH leftovers).

Saturday morning, we woke up and he headed out to cut down some brush for his duck blind. We decided to take the dogs to where we were going because there would be plenty of room for them to run and play without having to worry about traffic. As you can see, everyone had a great time.

Shortly after we all got into the truck to head home, things took a dark turn (okay, maybe I am being a bit dramatic). Belle was riding in the back of the truck when she spotted two golden retrievers out playing. So she LEAPSĀ from the back of a truck going 50-55 mph and right into the pathĀ of an oncoming car. The car slammed on breaks and I still don’t know how she managed to not get hit but she apparently bounced up as soon as she hit the pavement and started running.

I was absolutely terrified and the dumb dog seemed to think we were all playing when we were trying to catch her so she kept running with blood dripping down her face. We got her home and I took her directly to the bathroom to evaluate her injuries. Belle has a bad case of road rash on her check, a busted chin/lip, plus all sorts of scraps on her legs/elbow/paws but she seems relatively okay. She even wanted to go outside so she could catch Frisbee’s. I’ve been trying to keep her injuries clean, checking her pee and poop for signs of blood, and have given her the rest of the pain pills from her spaying earlier this year to help with the pain and soreness the rest of the weekend. I am so grateful that she was not injured worse and I probably should have taken her to the vet but they were all close for the weekend.

(Side Note – 11/13/15: Following Belle’s flying leap for freedom, Thursday night of the next week, my boyfriend and I were putting our Halloween decorations away in the attic. His dog runs into the attic and next thing we know, he has disappeared! The dog FELL through the attic! There was some siding over the front porch that had never been nailed down and with an 80 lb. dog stepping on it, it gave. We raced downstairs only to find that his dog was not there. Apparently as soon as he hit ground, he started running figuring that he was in big trouble! Thankfully he was okay and Belle’s marks have all nearly healed to just pink blotches for now).

So how was the rest of my Halloween? Fantastic. My mom and her boyfriend came over Saturday night to check out the Halloween decorations. Belle was so excited to see them. Then my cousin, her nephews, and their mom came over to trick or treat. AND THEN my grandma and granddaddy came over to see my glorious Halloween decorations. I didn’t have quite as many trick or treaters as I expected, but since this was my first year decorating, I’m sure more will come next year.

With the time change on Sunday, I woke up bright and early to take down my decorations and return my boyfriend’s house to normal. Sunday was a day of relaxing and walking Belle some so she wouldn’t be too sore. For supper Sunday night, my boyfriend made up aĀ delicious collard mixture (with collards and beans from our garden, local potatoes, fatback, and a delicious juice of apple cider vinegar, sugar, red pepper flakes and who knows what else) that we ate with my super-secret cornbread (with cheese, cream of corn, and candied jalapenos that I canned earlier in the year).

Belle, Belle, the dog from*…

My dog would have given Harry Houdini a run for his money. She is a master escape artist. Over the past few months, we have fortified the dog lot at my boyfriend’s houseĀ into something akin of Fort Knox. Chicken wire under the fence, several feet of concrete poured under the gate, double chicken wire on another side of the fence with chicken wire over those posts to discourage climbing and jumping over the fence.

I know what Belle's thinking: Me? A devious evil genius mastermind? Naw... just look at this face.
I know what Belle’s thinking: Me? A devious evil genius mastermind? Naw… just look at this face.

But apparently that wasn’t enough. Apparently I did not anticipate how smart my dog can be as she has now gone THROUGH the fence. Belle cleverly sought out a weak point in the side fencing, a small space where it had rotted away, and exploited that weakness. I caught her trying to sneak back into her hole, only because our chickens had alerted me to something prowling around on the outside of the fence.

So after we had put her back in the dog lot and fixed the fence, I ran inside to watch her from the bedroom window. Almost as soon as she thought no one was looking, she went around to some of the other fence posts, nudging them with her nose in an attempt to see if any others were loose. It is like she is one of the Velociraptors from theĀ JurassicĀ Park moviesĀ – intelligent, cunning, sneaky.

This dog is smart. But I’m smarter. I swear. I will win.

Poor Jake just doesn’t understand why Belle wants to escape, but I’m sure he enjoys the few minutes of peace and quiet he gets.

* My mom coined this lovely little poem a few months back in honor of my dog:

Belle, Belle, the dog from hell.

Thanks mom. šŸ™‚ But really, she’s not THAT bad.

Plotting her next move.

I’m Back [Photo Heavy]

I’m such a slack blogger. Well, I’m a slack gardener this year as well. I’ve been so busy running here and there that I haven’t taken any photos of our garden this year. Maybe next week. All of these pictures are from this past week. I thought it would be easier to catch up there before delving back into the past.

I missed opening day of the outdoor farmer's market last weekend but made sure to go this weekend. I got: a French Lavender, Wild Orange Butterfly Weed, Lemongrass, some garlic scapes (so excited for those!), a mixture of different salad greens, and some spring onions.
