July Catch-Up

Here I am, a week or so into August already, finally getting around to writing an entry for July. July was a crazy month between work, side jobs, and just general life. So I’ll do a photo post.

I was finally able to make it down to the Outer Banks to stay for a night in my grandparent’s timeshare. Its been years since I have been able to get down there.

This was the first big harvest out of the garden at my boyfriend’s house – corn, cabbage, squash, lots of various tomatoes, eggplants, carrots, peppers, and more!
P1030179
The majority of our tomatoes, we stew down and can to use over winter – look at how gorgeous this mixture is!

I was able to spend some time with my mom in July, so what did we do? Grill out of course.

Near the end of July, I was a vendor at Scares That Care Weekend in Williamsburg. I had a great time and met some fabulous people.

My swag. I added Seth Gilliam’s (Father Gabriel) signature to my poster from The Walking Dead.

The newest addition to our family – Cody (mom’s dog). He’s a golden retriever/lab mix and is absolutely adorable. Belle (my dog) is still a little hesitant about him but I know that she will grow to love him.

Catch-up (Pic Heavy)

Sweet Jake always makes the worst faces!

The chickens all seemed to enjoy the live meal worms that arrived a few weeks ago.

It was a cold, dreary day so don’t judge the outfit. 😀 We were thinking this picture has Christmas card potential!

Strawberry plants at mom’s – they are looking good!

Ziggy looking as regal as ever!

Yes, I still get an Easter basket even though I’m 28 years old… don’t you?
P1020179
Easter goodies from mom! One of those chocolate bunnies was for my boyfriend.

I’ve gotten back into the habit of drinking smoothies again for breakfast. It helps me start my day off right. My favorite blend is made with yogurt, coconut milk, orange juice, papaya, pineapple, banana, blueberries, and strawberries.

This was our weekend project. The chickens have been tearing up the newly planted broccoli, so instead of keeping them trapped in the coop while our garden gets established, we built a fence. As you can see on the left… Lil B pays no mind to the fence, but she doesn’t tear up anything. We are in a battle of wits with Emily though (our Rhode Island Red) – she wants to still fly over the fence. We’ve clipped her wings hoping that will help and will move to netting if all else.

This is the current dish I am crazy over – cherry tomatoes, red onion, cucumber, olives, dill, and feta cheese with a dressing of EVOO, balsamic vinegar, and lemon juice. I didn’t purposely make it photo-ready, it just happened as I chopped everything up and added it to the plate, layer by layer!

Garden Update

It’s been hard for me to be motivated lately. The weather goes from being snowy, to 70*F, to rainy and 45*F, to sunny – ALL IN ONE WEEK! This morning, when I left the house, it was sleeting and cold. :-/ But it is supposed to warm back up in time for this weekend..

Last weekend flew by (as does all of my weekends, it seems). Saturday, I went bowling for my mom’s birthday and had a blast. Sunday, Robb and I took the dogs to the pond behind the house and explored around. Poor Belle lost her harness but she had such a good time running around that I couldn’t dare scold her.

After a hard day of running around, Belle is not yet ready to lay day and is using the chair to prop her head up so she can sleep.

That afternoon, I spent some time in the garden, working a bit in the bed that Robb built for me. I dumped out the dirt from some of our pots in there – no need to waste it. I’ve been trying to add our fruit/vegetable waste/coffee grounds in there as well. I wanted to plant my ginseng, but got distracted by my gardening buddy. 😀

I’ve gathered all of my seeds together, except for the ones at mom’s house. I have my bed all planned out (for now).

Our chickens starting laying again on Wednesday after many months of us being egg-less (to the point where I broke down and purchased eggs last weekend). When I went to let the chickens out that morning, I noticed (and commented to many people) that Emily – our Rhode Island Red hen – had built herself a nest and that as she was standing in it, her butt twitching. I had a hunch that she was getting ready to lay and sure enough, I came home to find TWO eggs. They had another one for us yesterday. Yay!

Oh! The hard cider that I made earlier in the fall was a bit of a failure (taste wise), but I’m determined to try again. I purchased one of Brooklyn Brew Shop limited edition Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout kits and one of their sweet cider kits. I haven’t started either, but I plan to soon!

Playing Catch-Up

This weekend has been about a lot of little things. I haven’t been in the garden much the past few weeks as there isn’t really much to do right now. What things that are still planted are pretty much taking care of themselves. I’m still waiting on my shipment of garlic to arrive, as well as my apricot and hazelnut trees.

Yesterday I went to my uncle’s charity golf tournament and entertained myself with free food while the raffle was going on (didn’t win anything). Afterward, my grandparents kidnapped my mom and I and took out way out in to the middle of nowhere to dig through the depilated barn of an old family friend. We pulled out a few old plows. They need fixing up but will look pretty good out in our flower beds.

Today consisted of messing around the house. It’s more fun to show you what I did in pictures, so here we go!

Painted this little shelf that mom threw together so that I could have somewhere to display my canned items in the kitchen.

My sugar cane is taller than I am right now. It'll be time to harvest it soon (before the frost comes).

Mom and I spent a lot of time weeding the strawberry bed and catching it back up to where it needs to be.

I found some black walnuts when I was at the bookstore yesterday. I picked about a dozen up and spent today cracking open the green hulls. The nuts are on the drying rack but I have the green hulls in water to try to make some ink.
